Corrugated Metal Roofs Have Bolts That Are Visible Where Standing Seam Roofs Don’t
Standing seam metal roofs have raised seams that “lock” into place on top of one another to create a seamless look without visible bolts and screws. There are two versions of standing seam roofs: snap lock and mechanical lock. Snap lock roofs are used more for residential roofs as they are easily bent to fit sloped roofs. Mechanical lock roofs are for commercial buildings with flat or low slope roofs. Standing seam roofs are made of heavier metal than corrugated metal roofs. Because they are heavier, they are thicker material, lasting 50 years and providing great durability. Since the panels snap together, there are no visible bolts, providing a cleaner aesthetic and better curb appeal for a home.
Corrugated metal panels are overlapped by ridges and bolted to the roof. The panels are then sealed together with caulk to prevent moisture from seeping into the small gaps in between the separate panels. This roof gives a more industrialized look as the bolts are visible and requires more maintenance as caulk needs to be reapplied and bolts kept from rusting. Corrugated metal is cheaper than standing seam metal and is lighter.
